Tokyo's Golden Gai is a labyrinth of over 200 cosy bars tucked into six narrow alleys.  Some are so small they can only accommodate six people at a time.  A few are private or members-only.  Because space is limited (and to discourage bar-hopping), most charge a modest cover fee, often including a little snack. Don't worry about the cost — you’re on holiday!

Our favourite spot was Bar Otokichi, a cosy place with a warm, friendly local crowd.  The bartender, who might be a bit of a legend living upstairs, kept the vibe lively with a fantastic selection of rare, upbeat jazz tunes.  His special drink — shochu with matcha tea — is a must-try that perfectly captures Golden Gai’s blend of surprise and the unforgettable.

Golden Gai might seem a bit intimidating, but just remember: respecting the local culture goes a long way, and you'll be warmly welcomed.  These tiny bars are more like extensions of the owners’ personalities — more like inviting living rooms than typical bars. Come with an open mind, enjoy a drink, chat if the mood feels right, and take your time to soak it all in.

Spend an hour or two exploring Golden Gai before heading off to the Robot Restaurant or the Cha Cha Hana restaurant.
