The Robot Restaurant in Tokyo

The Robot Restaurant in Tokyo

If you are a fan of over-the-top Japan, then The Robot Restaurant Tokyo is a MUST!

"Restaurant" is a bit of a misnomer; this isn’t about food (though you can grab a bento, sushi, or just stick to popcorn and beer).  What you’re really here for is the show: a 90-minute Sensory Overload Spectacular, an explosion of neon, thundering taiko drums, laser battles, sequined dancers and giant robot-riding chaos at its finest.

Let the visuals do the talking here, because no words can really do justice to this palace of pop.

The venue itself sits in Shinjuku’s Kabukichō — Tokyo’s neon-soaked nightlife district — and has been drawing crowds since 2012.  At its peak, it ran four shows a night, seating around 230 people per performance in its underground theatre.

Itinerary: Start in Golden Gai, just a short walk away, where six narrow alleys are crammed with more than 200 tiny bars.  A couple of drinks there will give you the perfect buzz before plunging into the chaos. Shows usually run three times a day (late afternoon and evening), but it’s best to check ahead, as schedules are subject to change.  Aim to arrive 30 minutes early so you can enjoy the over-the-top lounge — a psychedelic prelude to the main event. Depending on the showtime you book, you can also have dinner pre- or post-show at Cha Cha Hana.

TIP: Booking online often gets you a discount.
